School Information

John Buchan School serves the British military communities of Sennelager and Paderborn and is named after John Buchan, the Scottish author, statesman and scholar.

Built in 1975, it has 22 classrooms, 2 science laboratories, extensive ICT facilities, specialist areas for art, music and technology.  There is also an extensive library, sports hall, playing fields, hall and separate dining area.

The school receives most of its pupils from two local First schools (Attenborough and Bishopspark), with only a small proportion coming from schools in the United Kingdom. Pupils are aged between 9 and 13 and the majority of leavers at the end of year 8 continue with their education at King's School, Gütersloh. Close links are maintained between all schools in the pyramid to ensure continuity in both academic and pastoral care.

School starts at 08:50 and finishes for lunch at 12:50.  The afternoon begins at 13:50 and finishes at 15:30. There is a morning break each day at 10:50

The teaching staff are UK qualified and are mainly recruited directly from schools within the United Kingdom. The support staff, include Teaching assistants, technicians, librarians and clerical staff.

 The school has close links with a number of German schools, notably the Goerdeler-Gymnasium in Paderborn . Paderborn University students and members of regularly visit to observe the English education system. The school has a well- known choir which regularly performs at Anglo-German events.
